What is the Nutritional Quality of Organic Foods versus Conventional Foods?

Another great question - sign photo by D. Hennessey

There is a lot of information online and off line speculating about what the nutritional quality of organic food is versus conventional food.

In 2009 a systemic review took place which reviewed scientific abstracts over the last fifty years. Of the 52,471 scientific articles reviewed only 162 studies showed comparison data between the nutritional value of organic food and conventional food in the same study and of these only 55 were studies of reliable quality according to the researchers involved.

Please follow this link to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition to read the original article and the results.

To me, it is amazing that in fifty years there have only been 55 valid studies on the nutritional difference between organic and conventional foods. I thought there would have been many more.

My conclusion would be numerous new unbiased studies need to be done to get a better over all picture as to how plants grown on nutrient dense certified organic land can add no significant mineral nutrient difference to a plant compared to conventionally treated land that is often depleted of minerals.

What do you think?

Cheers,
